ABOUT ENGINE RACE
WHAT IS ENGINE RACE?
Engine Race is a high-energy fitness competition combining running with functional workout stations.
Competitors complete a run, move through a workout station and repeat the process until they cross the finish line.
With different ability categories and the option to compete solo or with a partner, Engine Race gives everyone an opportunity to challenge themselves in a competitive but supportive environment.
IS ENGINE RACE LIKE HYROX?
Engine Race uses a similar combination of running and functional fitness, but it has its own format, distances, categories and atmosphere.
Our events are designed to be accessible to first-time competitors while still providing a serious challenge for experienced athletes.
WHO IS ENGINE RACE FOR?
Engine Race is for anyone who wants a challenge, a reason to train or the experience of taking part in a fitness competition.
Our events have welcomed complete beginners, regular gym-goers, experienced competitors and high-level athletes.
You do not need to belong to a particular gym or training club to enter.
DO I NEED TO BE AN EXPERIENCED ATHLETE?
No.
You do not need to be an elite athlete or an experienced competitor. Engine Race has different categories so you can choose a challenge that suits your current ability.
Many people use Engine Race as their first fitness event.
WHAT MAKES ENGINE RACE DIFFERENT?
Engine Race is built around three things: challenge, accessibility and community.
You will be pushed physically, but you will also compete in an environment where participants, supporters, coaches and local gyms come together to create an incredible atmosphere.
Whether you are chasing a competitive time or simply trying to cross the finish line, your effort matters.
RACE FORMAT
HOW DOES AN ENGINE RACE WORK?
The race combines running with seven functional workout stations.
The standard Engine Race format includes:
Running
SkiErg
Front plate carry
Row
Med-ball sit-ups
Dumbbell snatches
Devil’s press
Box step-ups
A final run to the finish
Distances, weights and repetitions depend on the category you enter. The exact format for each event will be published on the event page before you purchase your ticket.
WHAT ARE THE ENGINE RACE CATEGORIES?
Engine Race has three main ability categories:
Beginner
Designed for newer competitors, first-time racers and anyone looking for an achievable but meaningful challenge.
Athlete
Designed for regular gym-goers who train consistently and want to test their fitness.
Legend
Designed for experienced competitors looking for the toughest version of the race.
WHAT ARE THE RUNNING DISTANCES?
The standard running distances are:
Beginner: 200 metres per run
Athlete: 400 metres per run
Legend: 600 metres per run
Check the individual event page before booking, as formats may vary for special Engine Race events.
DO THE WEIGHTS AND REPETITIONS CHANGE BY CATEGORY?
Yes.
Beginner, Athlete and Legend competitors complete different weights, distances or repetitions to create an appropriate challenge for each category.
A full breakdown will be published on the relevant event page.
WHICH CATEGORY SHOULD I CHOOSE?
Choose the category that gives you a genuine challenge without making the event unrealistic or unsafe.
As a general guide:
Choose Beginner if this is your first event, you are newer to structured training or you want to focus on completing the race.
Choose Athlete if you train regularly and are comfortable with running and functional movements.
Choose Legend if you are an experienced athlete and want the most demanding version of the event.
If you are unsure, contact us before booking and we will help you decide.
DO I HAVE TO RUN THE WHOLE DISTANCE?
Running is an important part of Engine Race, but you can adjust your pace when needed.
You are welcome to slow down or walk sections of the course. The goal for many participants is simply to keep moving and reach the finish line.
HOW LONG DOES THE RACE TAKE?
Completion times vary depending on the event format, category, fitness level and whether you compete solo or as a pair.
Any event-specific time limits will be clearly explained before race day.
ARE THE MOVEMENTS TECHNICAL?
The stations use straightforward functional movements that most people can learn during normal gym training.
The standards for each movement will be explained before the race. Judges will also be present to explain requirements, count repetitions and help keep the event fair.
SOLO AND PAIRS
CAN I COMPETE ON MY OWN?
Yes.
Solo competitors complete the full race themselves.
CAN I ENTER WITH A PARTNER?
Yes.
Pairs are available across the Engine Race categories unless the individual event listing states otherwise.
Competing as a pair is a brilliant option if you want to share the challenge with a friend, training partner or teammate.
HOW DOES A PAIRS ENTRY WORK?
Pairs complete the race together and share the workout stations according to the rules of that particular event.
The precise rules, including how repetitions can be divided, will be explained in the event information and race briefing.
DO PAIRS HAVE TO RUN TOGETHER?
Pair rules may vary by event, but partners will normally be expected to remain together throughout the race.
The individual event briefing will confirm exactly how this works.
DO BOTH PEOPLE NEED TO BUY A TICKET?
This depends on how the pair ticket is listed on the booking page.
The ticket description will state whether the price covers one competitor or the complete pair. Check this carefully before completing your booking.
CAN I ENTER WITH SOMEONE FROM A DIFFERENT GYM?
Absolutely.
You can enter with any eligible partner. You do not need to train at the same gym or belong to an affiliated club.
